Promoted as ‘Asia’s first and only sustainable light art festival’, iLight Marina Bay was developed by Singapore’s Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), to attract crowds and international attention to the nation’s major new waterfront development precinct.

The URA commissioned Mary-Anne Kyriakou, with key members of the Smart Light Sydney 2009 team (including Sharon Thomas, Davina Jackson and Anthony Bastic), to work with local curators Kelley Cheng and Randy Chan and logistics experts Agility (Kwa Eng Kiat) to create the first event, held 15 October–7 November 2010.

Themed People, Place and Time, the inaugural iLight Marina Bay provided more than 433,000 visitors with a ‘smart light walk’ exhibiting 24 luminous installations from Singapore, Asian and international artists, including some works created for the Smart Light Sydney festival in 2009.

The key sustainability policy was the ‘Switch Off, Turn Up’ campaign, where owners of 16 major commercial buildings agreed to reduce their electricity consumption from lighting and air-conditioning, allowing the organizers to offset estimated consumption by the festival artworks, producing a total estimated power saving of 41,000 kWh during the entire festival.
