SuperLux Launch
More than 200 lighting design connoisseurs attended the optically arousing launch of the SuperLux book and exhibition at Sydney Customs House information centre last week (3 September 2o15).
Guests were delighted by the Deuce-designed SuperLux graphics, applied most spectacularly along the seven-screen media wall d0minating the west side of the ground floor, and extending to displays of large photographic panels on Level 1. Ten videos (edited by MindConsole, installed by DataScene) played along the media wall, the projection screen above the stage of the atrium, and on the first floor; supplemented by 20 large photographic panels – all featuring imagery from the SuperLux book. Also attracting attention were five spectacular light art and architecture works, designed by Mike Day, Mary-Anne Kyriakou, Damian Gascoigne and Alan Rose.
The launch speeches were introduced by Customs House manager Jennifer Kwok, who highlighted the 10th anniversary of the 2005 refurbishment of Customs House as a 21st century information centre, including regular exhibitions promoting emerging cultural themes and movements (including the first Smart Light Sydney exhibition in 2009). SuperLux book editor and exhibition co-curator Davina Jackson encouraged guests to celebrate ‘the biggest global arts movement of the early 21st century’ and congratulated Kwok and her Customs House team for presciently presenting creative advances well before their adoption in mainstream culture. Exhibition co-curator and lighting designer Mike Day highlighted the guest artists and their concepts for the five lightworks.
The book launch was supported by international publishers Thames & Hudson, media partner InDesign and Dutch-Australian book retailer Berkelouw, with Goldsmiths College of Art (Computing)/University of London as the university partner.
